It's pancake day!

Merci au Bridgewater Mercury pour l'article - pour info Mardi Gras c'est le jour des crepes ici (y'a pas de chandeleur)...pour moi Mardi Gras c'est des beignets (a la framboise ou au nutella!)

Dating back at least as far as the 15th century, pancake day is a tradition celebrated in a variety of ways around the globe, and one which has spawned a number of odd, uniquely British events.

Shrove Tuesday stems from the Christian period of Lent, a 40-day fasting, during which only the plainest of foodstuffs were eaten.

It therefore became traditional to use up all richer foods - eggs, sugar, milk and flour - ahead of this time. And how better than pancakes?

They give people the chance to use up these perishable foods, and enjoy a celebratory feast ahead of Lent.

The word "shrove" itself is, according to online encyclopedia Wikipedia, the past tense of "shrive", which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by doing penance - again, confession was a traditional way for Anglo Saxons to launch into Lent.

Today, Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in a number of English speaking countries (England, Ireland, Australia), while others use colourful terms like Mardi Gras and Carnaval - a moniker sure to be appreciated here, in the Home of Carnival.
